What We Do

  1. Driving school program (enable self reliance through mobility). In Lexington Kentucky, the lack of adequate public transportation creates the needs for a reliable and personal transportation for immigrants and refugees during their adjustment process, in order to be able to attend on time their workplaces, social services, doctor appointments etc. The first driving class was hosted at the Lexington Downtown Public Library prior to the partnering with Globalex and Fayette County Attorney. Twenty-one refugees successfully took the written test and received the Instruction Permit in July and September 2015.
  2. Financial literacy. Training on banking, budgeting, and credit score building. The majority of refugees and immigrants who came from Central Africa were not used to the banking system. Upon arrival in the United States, they are required to make use the banking system, which is for many, uncharted territory. Some had their credit score compromised after getting lured in payday loaning system. Banking policy are in English causing trouble to limited English proficient people. 17 people attended the January-March 2015 class and 18 people attended the August-September 2015 class.
  3. Network Women in Action (WAN). WAN was created in August 2015 and aims at creating African women leadership and fighting to reduce domestic violence. Challenges: the culture of nuclear family conceived on the predominance of man (husband) causes reluctance to women engagement. That is why there is a need for more awareness and outreach on negative consequences of maintaining the culture of the male pre-eminence. Images
